Sherco launch electric balance bikes for kids
Released just in time for Christmas are all-new electric ‘balance bikes’ for kids from Sherco.
Light, quiet, environmentally friendly, easy to handle and, most importantly, fun to ride, Sherco’s ‘EB12’ and ‘EB16’ balance bikes have been designed to help youngsters develop balance, braking and throttle control, hand-eye co-ordination and body position – the foundations of successful motorcycling.
Both models feature simple twist-and-go operation, selectable power modes, battery charge display, adjustable seat heights and easy-change battery packs. They can also function as non-powered push-along bikes, too.
EB12
Sherco’s introductory model is the EB12 that’s suitable for children with little or no previous experience on balance bikes. Designed and sized to suit kids aged two to six or weighing up to 34kg. An inseam of more than 14 inches (35cm) is recommended to allow the child to reach the ground with a slight bend in the knees.
Powered by a 100W brush motor and a 2.6Ah lithium-ion battery, the EB12 can produce a top speed of approximately 7.5km/h in low-power mode and 15km/h in full power mode.
Weighing just 9kg, standard EB12 features include a lightweight aluminium frame and handlebars, 12-inch wheels, pneumatic tyres, height-adjustable seat and a front number plate with decal set.
EB16
Stepping up from the EB12, the larger EB16 is suitable for children aged five to six years, or weighing up to 40kg, with an 18-inch (45cm) inseam. Ideally, youngsters should only move up to this model after gaining some experience on the EB12, or if they’re taller than average and need the larger platform.
The EB16 also features pneumatic tyres and a height-adjustable seat, as well as the front number plate and decals, but is defined by its 16-inch wheels and 170W brush motor and 5.2Ah lithium-ion battery.
The larger motor and upsized battery deliver top speeds of 10km/h in low-power mode and 21km/h in full-power mode. This model weighs 11kg.
Charge and Recharge
With electric power activated, run time for each model is up to 60 minutes, but battery life will vary depending on the power mode setting, rider weight and riding conditions. Recharge time is up to three hours via an external charge port, with each model able to be recharged from a standard household outlet.
The battery is removable and additional batteries are available separately, so one battery can be charging while another is in use.
Built-in Safety
In addition to electric operation, both of Sherco’s balance bikes are designed to function as push-along bikes (hence the recommended inseam and ground reach), so children can learn to push, balance, brake and coast in the non-powered mode. Once the child demonstrates proficient use and understanding of the brake and the ability to coast and brake while standing, then the low-power mode can be engaged before stepping up to the full-power mode as experience and confidence levels grow.
Beyond the selectable power modes, other safety features include a fully-enclosed chain cover and a hand lever-activated rear drum brake. A power cut-off switch built into the brake lever automatically cuts power if the rider pulls in the lever, thus preventing a panic throttle twist.
Local Pricing
Priced from $649 for the EB12 and $749 for the EB16, each Sherco balance bike includes an Australian 240V household charger, owners’ manual and toolkit.
Spare batteries are available separately in 2.6Ah ($139) and 5.2Ah ($199) capacity, both of which can be used in either bike.
Available now from Sherco dealers, both electric balance bikes are backed by a 12-month parts-only warranty. See your Sherco dealer for details.
