Custom Showcase
And Dylan Robb's carbon fibre-clad custom, built around a 1969 model Harley Ironhead motor, was a worthy winner of the crown. Dubbed the "Ironhead Racer" the bike shows influences of old boardtrack racers, but closer inspection reveals an impressive amount of innovative and modern engineering detail. We'll take a closer look at this bike in a future issue.
Dylan's creation was just one of a number of impressive custom choppers and bobbers on show from builders around Australia that were on show at the Gold Coast Expo.
ACT-based custom builders, Chopperworks had an impressive display, including the only true Bagger custom - at least to date - in Australia. The '07 FLHTCU turbocharged bagger with it's distinctive 23/20 spoked wheels was a real head-turner at the show and has already featured in a number of magazines. We'll take a closer look at it in a future issue.
If Harleys and sportsbikes can be customised, why not tourers? That's the question Niels Verhaar asked himself when he was looking to replace the treasured Honda Valkyrie he lost in a collision with a kangaroo.
Niels has been importing ADR-compliant Valkyries since late last year, and sent the first model he sourced to Perry Mallet in Queensland for the fantastic-looking 'true fire' paint job shown. Niels had planned to advertise the initial stock of Valkyries in JUST BIKES, but word of mouth was so quick that the first lot sold out before he could advertise!
Niels has spent two years getting bikes like these, as well as the rare Honda Rune, complied to meet our strict ADRs. No new Valkyries are expected until mid-2010, but if you'd like your name on the list when the next consignment of these big tourers becomes available, contact Niels on 0409 455 375.
