Savic launches C-Series
After debuting in concept form at last year’s Australian Motorcycle Expo in Melbourne, Savic Motorcycles unveiled their production model – the C-Series – at the Australian Motorcycle Festival in Wollongong this past November.
Speaking at the Festival, company founder Dennis Savic said the goal of Savic Motorcycles was to produce a full-size electric motorcycle that is both high in style and low in price.
In the 12 months since the reveal of the concept. Savic said that an entirely new electric powertrain has been developed. Liquid-cooled, this electric motor will be available in various power ratings and serves as a stressed member of the frame. As part of a reduced reliance on existing cycle parts, a new, single-sided swingarm has also been developed and built in-house.
Choice of 3
Three different configurations of the C-Series will be offered, defined mainly by power output and battery capacity.
The entry-level Omega runs a 25kW/110Nm 90-volt ‘SM1.1’ 3-Phase AC electric motor, fuelled by a 7kWh battery pack for a claimed 120km range. The mid-range Delta uses a more powerful, 120-volt version of the same basic engine, with 40kW/140Nm and a 9kWh battery capacity for 150km range.
Top of the C-Series offerings is the Alpha, which produces 60kW/180Nm from its ‘SM1.3’ electric motor, with an 11kWh battery capacity and 200km claimed range. The Alpha is also the hottest performer of the three, with a 3.5-second 0-100km/h time, where the Delta hits the ton in 4.5 seconds and the Omega in 5.5 seconds. This increased performance is in spite of the additional battery capacity adding weight.
New Features, New Style
Seen alongside the concept presented last year, the production C-Series (which is actually labelled as a ‘production prototype’) is markedly different in a number of areas.
The backbone frame and general profile remains, but the most obvious change is the switch from a production bike dual swingarm to a bespoke single-sided unit produced in tube steel to complement the frame.
Also notable is the switch from chain to belt for the final drive, while the suspension has been modified at both ends.
Brembo brakes and ABS will be standard, along with regenerative braking, selectable riding modes and traction control.
In terms of styling, the production bike retains the same solo configuration as last year’s concept, as well as its polished metal “fuel tank” and ducktail, but both these elements have been restyled and are more aesthetically pleasing than on the concept.
The other notable aesthetic change is the large belly pan fairing that covers some of the powerplant and battery pack, but also works effectively at tying the overall design together.
The vertically-stacked headlight configuration remains, with a compact angular fairing added; the style of which is reflected in a new front mudguard design.
While the C-Series unveiled in Wollongong used MV Agusta wheels shod with Pirelli tyres, Savic says the full production version will use alloys of the company’s own design, with the option of a carbon fibre wheel, too.
Speaking of options, Savic will also offer a bespoke customisation service for buyers to personalise their C-Series, with various bodywork finishes, seat trim and other details available to individual preference.
Limited Production
Savic Motorcycles intend to build only 49 examples of the C-Series in 2020, with no set limit for each version planned and the mix of Omega/Delta/Alpha to be determined by customer preference and.
Potential customers are invited to contact Savic Motorcycles direct – via savicmotorcycles.com - with expressions of interest. Savic representatives will then work with the customer on their preferred model and its specification before the order is confirmed and a deposit paid. Savic will keep the purchaser updated throughout the build process.
