One-off Winchester motorcycle consigned for US auction
They're known the world over for their guns, but for a brief period, this item shows the famous firearms firm officially known as the 'Winchester Repeating Arms Company' also built motorcycles.
Research undertaken by the vendor uncovered that the single cylinder, belt drive motorcycle was one of 200 alleged to have been commissioned by Winchester between 1909 and 1911. While badged and sold as 'Winchesters', the bikes were apparently built by the Edwin F. Merry Company in San Francisco. The lot on offer is believed to be the only one of its kind left anywhere in the world and is billed as being original except for the muffler, tyres and part of the rear mudguard.
The Winchester is one of many vintage motorcycles consigned for the MidAmerica Auctions event, held in conjunction with the Pebble Beach RetroAuto event in California this weekend,August 19 to 21. Other lots of interest include a rare 1909 Wagner single, 'Rikuo' license-built Harley-Davidson from Japan, '48 Harley 'Hummer', rare & restored Indians, Brough Superior SS80, restored 1932 Triumph CD, as well as a "brand new" 1957 Triumph TRW still in its packing case!
