JUST BIKES LAMS Guide 2013 - new bike options
What is LAMS?
The Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme has been created in order to better identify and categorise motorcycles that are considered suitable for learners in their first year of owning a motorcycle. Replacing the old 250cc capacity limit which was the previous learner benchmark, LAMS has opened up a far greater range of options for riders looking for their first bike.
First introduced in 2007, all States in Australia now have a LAMS motorcycle list, available through state road governing bodies like the NSW RTA, VicRoads, Transport & Main Roads, etc.
While there are a number of makes and models to choose from, the common denominators are an engine capacity of no more than 660cc and which do not exceed a power to weight ratio of 150 kilowatts per tonne (Kw/t). Most of the 250cc models are still legal under LAMS, with the exception of a number of high-performance two stroke twins, which were, in part, the spur for implementing LAMS in the first place.
LAMS - New Bike Options
For those looking for their introduction to motorcycling, there are plenty of new bikes to choose from. The major Japanese manufacturers all have a range of learner-legal machinery, from Suzuki's retro-styled TU250X to Kawasaki's slick Ninja 300, Yamaha's recently revamped YZF-R15, to the cool customs from Hunter Motorcycles, Johnny Pag and Torino.
There are always a few new players in the LAMS game, too. One of the most recent is Cleveland Cycle Werks. The 'Heist,' is the first of these US-designed, Asian-built machines to arrive here, and has already made an impact, thanks to impressive reviews in the US, and a strong local dealer network.
With road/commuter, sports, scooter, cruiser and trail models available from a number of manufacturers, there should be a bike in the LAMS market to suit just about every taste.
Use the following list as a guide when looking for your current model LAMS machine, but check with the motorcycle dealer or your state roads and licensing authority to confirm any bike you intend to purchase is legal for you to ride on your state's learner's permit or equivalent.
