Honda previews 2022 Africa Twin range
Ahead of its Australian arrival later this year, Honda have released details on the 2022 version of their Africa Twin adventure tourer.
While there are no major changes for the coming year, some subtle alterations and updates have been made to both the standard and Adventure Sports variants. These include new standard features, modified existing features, upgraded settings on variants equipped with the DCT auto and new colours.
2022 Africa Twin
The base model Africa Twin adds a rear carrier as standard for 2022 and introduces new-look colour schemes that include new graphics.
The underpinnings are unchanged, though, including the lightweight frame and liquid-cooled 1084cc parallel twin engine.
Four pre-set riding modes – Tour, Urban, Gravel and Off-Road – remain, as do two additional custom modes where the rider can set their own parameters of power delivery (4 levels), engine braking (3 levels), HTSC torque control (7 levels), wheelie control (3 levels), rear lift control and ABS intervention (with off-road setting). All these parameters are managed by the Africa Twin’s six-axis IMU.
Cruise control remains standard, as does a full-colour 6.5-inch TFT touchscreen multi-function instrument display with USB, Bluetooth connectivity and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
The new colour schemes for the MY22 Africa Twin are Pearl Glare White and Grand Prix Red, both of which feature “Big Logo” oversized ‘Africa Twin’ identification on the upper fairing and ‘1100’ on the seat surround.
2022 Africa Twin Adventure Sports
The Africa Twin Adventure Sports will continue to be offered in manual transmission and DCT form for 2022, but settings on the latter have been changed.
Three selectable operational modes remain for the DCT – manually adjustable ‘MT’, automatic ‘D’ and sports automatic ‘S’ – as does the ‘G’ switch that that reduces the amount of clutch slip for improved off-road functionality.
What’s changed on this set up for 2022 is what Honda calls further optimisation of the first and second gears to allow smoother handling from a standing start and when riding at low speed.
While the Africa Twin Adventure Sports shares its engine, frame, brakes, electronics and most of its suspension componentry with the base Africa Twin, what sets it apart starts with the larger fuel tank, enlarged fairing, beefier engine bashplate, gold rims, larger handguards, heated grips and 5-way adjustable windscreen.
These features remain on the 2022 model, but the screen is now shorter by 110mm. Honda claim this still offers good wind protection and doesn’t impact visibility.
The Adventure Sports continues to be offered in three variants – manual, DCT and DCT ES – with the latter defined by the addition of Showa EERA (Electronically Equipped Ride Adjustment) suspension that electronically adjusts damping and preload to suit load and riding conditions, including 24-stage rear spring preload to cater for luggage and pillions.
Colour schemes on the Africa Twin Adventure Sports for 2022 are Pearl Glare White and Matte Ballistic Black. Both feature new ‘cracked terrain’ graphics and while the Pearl Glare White is available across the range, Matte Ballistic Black is limited to the Adventure Sports manual.
Pricing for the 2022 Africa Twin range starts at $20,999 (+ ORCs) and is backed by a 2-year warranty.
Honda Australia says local delivery of the MY22 Africa Twin is expected in Q4, 2021.
