Flying Merkel pair consigned for US auction

Auctions America by RM are hosting the auction, which will feature a number of other veteran motorcycles, including early marques like Sears, Excelsior, Wagner and more.

Of the two Flying Merkels on offer, one is a 1910 example, the other from 1911. The two represent two different periods in the company's history. The 1910 example is a 61ci (1000cc) v-twin, and comes from the period of 'Light Manufacturing Company' ownership, when production was moved from Wisconsin to Philadelphia. The 1910 model is one of the rarest of all Flying Merkels, with the one-year-only external oil pump mounted on the engine case.

This 1910 example is billed as being approximately 80% complete, and underwent a full mechanical and cosmetic restoration in 2011. Only the wheel rims and spokes, fenders and handlebars were missing and had to be replaced. The bike hasn't been run since completion, but the motor was reportedly bench-tested prior to installation in the chassis. The 1910 Flying Merkel is being offered at NO RESERVE, and is expected to sell in the US$175,000 - $200,000 range.

The 1911 Flying Merkel is another recent restoration, and was part of a US East Coast collection for many years. Few details were provided for the 1911 example, but that year represents another change of location and ownership for the American marque. In 1911, the 'Miami Cycle Company' purchased the Merkel marque, and moved production to Middletown, Ohio.

While the 1911 example had been set up for static display only, the mechanicals were reportedly rebuilt as part of a recent restoration. The second Merkel for this auction is expected to fetch US$120,000 - $140,000.
