Fermin Aldeguer signs with Ducati for MotoGP
The wheels are in motion for the 2025 MotoGP grid, with Moto2 rider Fermin Aldeguer signing a deal with Ducati Corse that’ll put him on a Desmosedici GP bike for the next two seasons.
The MotoGP deal is with Ducati Corse only, not a specific team, meaning the Spanish teenager could be added to any of the three satellite teams – Prima Pramac Racing, Gresini Racing and Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team – currently running the Desmosedici. Stepping straight into the Ducati Lenovo Team is considered unlikely.
Aldeguer, who turned 19 in April, had an unconventional entry to grand prix racing, bypassing the usual Moto3 entry point, instead competing in the Moto2 European Championship in 2020. After an easy win in that series, the Spaniard join the MotoE World Cup grid in 2021, where he finished ninth overall, with a best race placing of fourth. In the same year, Aldeguer was drafted in by Termozeta Speed Up (Boscoscuro) for several rides in the Moto2 World Championship, where his best result was a seventh.
Called up to Moto2 full-time with Speed Up Racing in 2022, Aldeguer finished 15th overall in a season marred by eight retirements, but also including seven Top 10 finishes. Retained by Speed Up Racing for 2023, Aldeguer improved, taking his first Moto2 win at the British GP, then the last four wins of that season to finish third overall in the championship behind Pedro Acosta and Tony Arbolino.
"I'm ecstatic to have this opportunity,” Aldeguer said following the signing in March. “Thanks to Ducati, I'll realise the dream I've pursued since childhood. The time has arrived to take the big leap and compete with the world's finest riders. What's more, I'll be doing it with the best bike on the grid.
“Now that I know what the future holds, it's time to focus solely on this season, where I face a significant challenge in Moto2. I'll give my all to leave this category with my head held high, aiming for the best possible results before embarking on the new adventure in MotoGP."
After three rounds of the 2024 Moto2 season, Aldeguer sits seventh overall, with a best race result of third, with a best race result of third, achieved at the GP of the Americas.
Who Aldeguer will replace amongst the current Ducati MotoGP lineup won’t be revealed until later in the season, but Franco Morbidelli and Fabio Di Giannantonio are the riders most under threat.
