1949 BSA C11
In my line of work I get to see some rough old gems from the past, and bring them back to life so they can be enjoyed into the future.
A customer came into our shop recently with a special request. He asked if we could undertake a nut-and-bolt restoration of his 1949 BSA C11, which had a great deal of sentimental value to him -- the motorcycle had been in his family for years. We can't stress enough how enthusiastic and determined he was to ensure the motorcycle was restored back to its former glory.
First we stripped down the entire machine to its major components (frame, engine, gearbox, wheels, tank/tinware etc). Some bits, like the footrest bolts, were seized and we had to apply dispersant/lubricant, heat and some gentle persuasion. With these old bikes you have to be very patient because the last thing you need is to snap a head on a bolt. Some of these fasteners clearly haven't been touched for decades!
Then we began to disassemble the components that required painting and plating. We degreased, sand-blasted and painted the frame, wheel hubs, tinware, and assorted nuts and bolts with black 2-pack enamel. We prefer painting in enamel because it is robust, you don't lose any detail and it gives that original finish.
All chrome parts, including the fuel tank, rims, handlebars, exhaust, levers and assorted nuts/bolts, were sent to Hamilton Chrome in Newcastle for chrome-plating. We considered replacing some of these bits but thought it best to restore the original parts wherever possible.
We are currently stripping down the engine, gearbox and forks. We intend to Hydro-Tech blast all of the alloy cases and covers. This gives the alloy a lustre that is reminiscent of freshly cast alloy. We also provide this as a service to both public and trade.
Once we receive the chrome plated parts back, we intend to re-build the wheels and assemble the frame, then move onto the engine and gearbox.
The process in a nutshell:
- Strip down motorcycle to major components
- Disassemble forks, frame, wheels, and other parts that require painting, chrome-plating
- Blast all parts that require painting with 2-pack black
- Paint in 2-pack black
- Disassemble, clean, inspect, re-condition engine
- Disassemble, clean, inspect, re-condition gearbox
