Triumph Sprint ST
The Sprint ST houses a fantastic 1,050cc fuel injected three cylinder engine, the very essence of what makes a Triumph special. The machine has huge reserves of torque for linear effortless drive in any gear and great reserves of horsepower for when it's needed. Peak power is an impressive 127PS at 9,250rpm while peak torque of 105Nm arrives at just 7,500rpm.
Enhancing the engine is a buttery smooth six-speed gearbox and clutch fitted with an anti-backlash gear. The character of the three-cylinder layout is unfettered but the engine has a seamless polish that provides a perfect counterpoint to the lusty power delivery. The Sprint ST comes with Triumph's second generation Keihin Engine Control Unit, with more sophisticated mapping for quicker starting, cleaner running and better fuel economy.
Matching the Sprint ST's sublime engine is a superb chassis. An aluminium beam frame, featuring a wheelbase of 1,457mm, makes for a fabulously composed yet fast-steering motorcycle with a huge scope of ability. High quality 43mm cartridge-type telescopic forks, adjustable for spring preload, give fine control while the rear shock is remotely adjustable for spring preload and rebound damping. A pair of powerful four-piston brake calipers mated to 320mm floating discs provide superb stopping power, a two-piston caliper and 255mm disc work on the rear wheel.
The Sprint ST's sleek look is both functional and stunning and everywhere neat touches, like the chrome infill bars and front indicators set in the mirrors, add class. The side panels have been designed to provide thermal insulation for the rider while the seat is easy to straddle at standstill as well as providing the comfort factor. The high, pulled back handlebars have been tailored to give a relaxed riding position. Styling cues, such as the triple front headlights, triple exhaust exits and LED rear light complement each other fluidly and the Sprint ST has the cohesive air of a machine that mixes function and form perfectly.
For 2008, the Sprint ST uses new style lenses in the headlight projectors offering an improved distribution of light and overall headlight performance while the footrests have also been modified and now employ a more durable rubber for prolonged wear. Instrumentation includes an LCD trip computer with average fuel consumption and speed functions, amongst others. Fuel capacity is a useful 20 litres. Further expanding the Sprint ST's role are the colour matched factory designed waterproof hard panniers that are fitted as standard. To further increase carrying capacity you can add a matching top box from Triumph's wide range of accessories.
An ABS equipped version of the Sprint ST is also available. Triumph's ABS system is carefully designed to be unobtrusive and to retain all the sensations and feel of riding, adding to the rider's control under hard braking. The system, which works independently on the front and rear brakes, operates at 100 calculations per second and can sense the exact moment the wheel is about to lock up. It then releases the brake - over a fraction of a second - to allow the tyre to retain grip before reapplying the brake. The switch controlling this process operates at a mere four milliseconds and the system modulates the pressure between these two points to achieve optimum braking.
Two new colour options join Tornado Red in 2008, Pacific Blue and Graphite. All three are available for both the standard and ABS models.
The Sprint ST has proved itself a class mover in every sense. It remains undoubtedly the shrewd choice of any rider looking for a versatile, all round motorcycle with a sporting edge, genuine touring ability and a real sense of style.
