The Motorcycle: Design, Art, Desire - 2020 Savic Alpha
The history of motorcycle design is as much a story of Australia as it is of any other country and that’s proven with an Australian-designed-and-built electric motorcycle that features in The Motorcycle: Design, Art, Desire exhibition at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA); an exhibition that’s closing soon.
A new player in the industry, Victorian-based Savic Motorcycles is bringing a new energy to the electric motorcycle scene, too. Dennis Savic and his small team of designers, engineers and fabricators first presented their creation in concept form at Moto Expo Melbourne in 2018.
Evolving and developing the concept since then, Savic Motorcycles are now on the cusp of small volume series production, offering a choice of three models on their C-Series electric platform, all defined by café racer-inspired styling, but differing in engine output – from 25kW to 60kW.
The Savic displayed in Brisbane is a prototype of the premium ‘Alpha’ model which offers 60kW and 180Nm from its 3-phase electric motor and a 200km riding range from its 11kWh battery pack. To this, Savic adds a backbone frame and single-sided swingarm, along with distinctive styling and café racer staples, like clip-on handlebars and rearset pegs.
The success of the C-Series (most of the initial limited-edition production run has been pre-sold) shows this Aussie startup has hit the right mix of technology, performance and style that early adopters of electric motorcycles are looking for.
In terms of its place in The Motorcycle: Design, Art, Desire, the Savic C-Series not only showcases electric motorcycle design for the future, but also completes a circle of local manufacturing started by the ‘Spencer’ that was designed and built in Brisbane by David Spencer in 1906. That bike is also on display.
As a bonus, the Savic C-Series Alpha is part of an interactive experience where you can have your photo taken on a Savic against a futuristic backdrop
Other attractions at the exhibition include a cinema programme that explores depictions of motorcycles in movies from around the world, interactive activities and the ‘Full Face’ display of motorcycle helmets individualized by fifteen cutting-edge Australian artists.
The Motorcycle: Design, Art, Desire is in its final days at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) – and must close on Monday, 26 April, 2021. To purchase tickets, go to qagoma.qtix.com.au
