New venue, new format for Queensland ASX round
The undercover, 9,500-seat venue has been a staple of the ASX series since the late 1980s, but last hosted a supercross round in 2014. Recent Queensland ASX rounds have been held at outdoor venues, including the Jimboomba X Stadium south of Brisbane, Coolum Stadium on the Sunshine Coast and the Toowoomba Showgrounds.
As well as the return to a favourite venue, the Queensland round will also see a new promoter take the reins, with Troy Bayliss Events (TBE) replacing Scott Bannon Promotions. Organisers of the annual Australian Motorcycle Expos in Sydney and Melbourne, TBE also ran the Victorian and South Australian rounds of last year’s ASX championship.
“History shows indoor arenas create high levels of exciting and entertaining Supercross racing,” said TBE’s Troy Bayliss of the series’ return to the Brisbane Entertainment Centre. “Fans are treated to an experience like no other, the tracks are tight and produce incredible racing full of passes.
“Some manufacturers have already indicated more international talent will be competing in the 2019 championship due to the inclusion of the Brisbane Entertainment Centre,” Bayliss added.
Sponsored by Honda and scheduled for 12 October, the opening round in Brisbane will feature a new format, too, with two final races in both the SX1 and SX2 classes. This 'Double Header' format will see points from each final combined to determine the round champion, while also delivering more racing for the fans.
Freestyle motocross will be part of the programme, too, with other attractions to be announced.
