Megelli 250 R
The Megelli 250 R and 250 are leading the charge in overturning that perception though, by producing one of the best looking non-Japanese junior sports bikes we've ever seen.
Megelli started as a dream of Barry Hall, the founder of SLD UK, in 2005. SLD UK combined their vision with the capabilities of the best 2 wheel design house and production and quality engineering company in the UK. Manufacturing facilities were set up in China under careful guidance from UK experts. The result is a compelling motorcycle in every respect:- stunning design, exceptional build quality at a new level of affordability for a motorcycle of this calibre.
Power from the 230cc single is more than capable for most beginners, backed up by a 5 speed gearbox and decent disc brakes front and rear. Seating position is comfortable, if a little on the sporty side, and the 135kg claimed dry weight should be manageable by all but the tiniest of riders.
That aside, the very 'Italian' styling is one of the two things that will attract junior riders to this bike, though. The other? A retail price of only $4,990 for the faired 'R' version and $4,590 for the naked 'S' - that's over $2,000 cheaper than a comparable alternative from the big four!

If you're thinking more 'cruiser' instead of 'sport' for your first ride, the QJ Supershadow 250 is also available from Motorsport Importers.
Power for this unit comes courtesy of a 238cc air cooled V-Twin, with the rest of the styling very much in the cruiser mould. It's no speed demon, but maybe that's just as well, as there's only a single disc front brake and drum rear.
The well-padded seat and semi ape hanger bars do make for a comfy ride, though.
Pricing is again very affordable at $4,490 RRP.
A QJ 'Speed 150' commuter is also available, at an even more afforable $2,590 RRP.
