Lake Perkolilli Red Dust Revival returns for 2022

Last held in 2019, the Lake Perkolilli Red Dust Revival is back this year, with more than one hundred pre-war cars and motorcycles, as well as thousands of spectators, expected to make the trek out to the natural claypan track in Western Australia’s remote Lake Perkolilli, which is located near Kalgoorlie and around 640km inland from Perth.

Motor racing at Lake Perkolilli started in 1914 and officially ended in 1939, but since 1997, the legend of the 4.25km natural claypan circuit has been enhanced by a series of revival events where cars and motorcycles built between 1914 and 1939 re-enact the past.

The next revival event is scheduled for 19-25 September, under the aegis of the Lake Perkolilli Motor Sports Club.

The aim of the Red Dust Revival is to capture the essence of early outback motor racing, which was rough and ready, but spectacular. Teams will spend a week camping at the claypan, just like they did a century ago.

Around 110 cars and 40 motorcycles are expected this year, and while entries for the car classes have already been filled, a few places were still available for the motorcycle classes at time of writing.

Eligible motorcycles are limited to those built in the 1914-1939 period, with frame and engine components to be from this era, too. See the event website - www.motoringpast.com.au/red-dust-revival - for a more detailed explanation of vehicle eligibility.

The 2022 Lake Perkolilli Red Dust Revival runs from 19 to 25 September, with re-enactments on the clay track from 23 to 25 September.
