Kawasaki ZX2-RR
However, the traditional 250cc commuter/sportsbike remains a favourite first bike option for beginners, and for good reason, too, as there are many brands and styles to choose from in this engine capacity.
Melbourne-based Sumoto have been in the business of importing bikes for learner riders for over 15 years, and learner bikes are all they do, so they always have plenty to choose from. Have a look through the Sumoto advertisement in this issue, or their online site - www.sumoto.com.au - and you'll notice cruisers like the VT250 custom and XV400 Virago, as well as naked commuters like the CB400, Monster 400M, VTR250 and XJR400.
For this month's feature bike, we're looking at one of Sumoto's own creations - the 'ZX2-RR'.
Sumoto start with an imported ZXR 250C, which means a 1991-95 build 249cc 4 cylinder 4 stroke, and then make the necessary additions for 2009 local compliance. On top of that, Sumoto fit each of these ZXR 250Cs with a new fairing package, including mirrors, indicators, front mudguard, ducktail, single-seat cowl and other plastics to create what they call the Kawasaki ZX2-RR - which is also unique to Sumoto. The addition of the upgraded body kits makes for a far more modern-looking bike, that's also available in a variety of colours. The bike featured here has a matt black 'stealth' finish, but gloss black, green and a number of other colour options are available. As Sumoto have their own paint facility, they can paint your ZX2-RR in just about any colour you fancy - at no extra cost over the $7,990 base purchase price (+ ORCs).
Mechanically, the bikes are untouched, but the factory-spec 45hp engine, with 6 speed gearbox and twin front/single rear disc brakes of the ZXR 250C should have enough grunt and stopping power to suit most riders. Replacement exhaust systems and extras are available for an additional $500. Phone or call in to Sumoto for more details on this.
Of course, being used bikes, albeit with modern compliance, there are variations in quality and mileage across individual models, but all feature new tyres (part of the compliance process), and each ZX2-RR is sold with a 6 month warranty, with the option of a 12 month warranty (engine & gearbox only). There are usually plenty of models in stock, so you can hunt around the showroom floor to find one to suit your requirements. Sumoto are also bringing in new stock every month, so if you can't find what you want now, hold tight as it might arrive in the next shipment! Sumoto also do servicing on site (with ½ price first service for Victorian-based purchasers as part of a free $1,000 starter pack), and stock a range of accessories and riding gear. Speaking of gear, when you purchase a ZX2-RR - or any other bike from the Sumoto range - you're also eligible for the "FREE $1,000 Pack" with gear, servicing, delivery or other goodies to the value of $1,000. See the website for the different packages available for Victorian and interstate purchases. ZX2-RR pricing starts at $7,990 + on road costs.
If you're a learner rider, the ZX2-RR - and Sumoto - are definitely worth a look. Call in to their store at 47-51 Boundary Road, North Melbourne and check out the range for yourself.
