Honda announce new Pioneer ATV
Available in two seat and four seat variants, the Pioneer is powered by Honda's 675cc, liquid-cooled, four-stroke, single-cylinder engine with fuel injection and a specially-designed intake to limit dust ingress into the motor.
Transmission is an automotive-style automatic, with a heavy-duty torque converter and three hydraulic clutches that provide positive engine braking. A two-stage shift map optimises the power delivery throughout the engine's rev range.
Given its off-road focus, suspension is independent all round, with 200mm travel in front and 230mm in the rear. Rear shocks feature preload adjustability to handle the Pioneer's load capabilities - 454 kg carrying and 680 kg towing.
The Pioneer's Occupant Protection Structure has been built out of sturdy, large diameter tubing and includes details such as integrated handholds, recessed top tubes and a more spacious structure to enhance protection. It also meets OSHA's 1928.53^ rollover protection standard, so it's legal for farm use.
Compact overall dimensions and car-style controls make the Pioneer easy to operate, with a tight turning circle and impressive manoeuvrability.
The Pioneer '700-4' four seat variant features a clever, adaptable design that allows both rear seats to fold into the load bed, either individually or together. The complete bed space also has an hydraulically-assisted tilt function.
The Pioneer 700-2 two seater uses a conventional tilt bed (still hydraulically-assisted), instead of the seat-in-bed design of the 700-4.
Suitable for farm use, hunting, as well as a lot of off-road adventuring applications, we're tipping the Pioneer will find favour with racers soon after its release, too.
The new Pioneer 700-4 and the Pioneer 700-2 will be available in Australia early 2014. Information regarding price will be released in the coming months. www.hondamotorcycles.com.au
