Ducati Monster
Having already achieved record sales and long been the most admired and widely imitated motorcycles, Ducati is now extending its Monster range still further for 2007 by focusing on the SR series, known to motorcyclists as the "single-sided swingarm" family and distinguished by its aggressive and exclusive appearance.
In 2003 the arrival of the high powered, gritty S4R represented a major milestone in the history of Ducati motor-cycles, while 2005 saw the launch of the S2R with a tamer, less daunting engine that retained the appearance of the aggressive S4R but appealed to those who preferred less extreme performance. Offered in 800cc and 1000cc versions, with two-valve Desmo and air-cooling, the SR2 immediately won favour on the international market, as proven once again by the massive sales.
2006 will leave an equally important mark in the history books, making a breakthrough in terms of quality, performance, exclusiveness and sheer personality.
For 2007, Ducati offers a no compromise, authentic naked superbike with all out power and grunt from the Desmodromic "Testastretta" powerplant. This jewel in the Monster crown comes with a brand new name tag, the Monster S4R S, and is destined to become the new benchmark in this segment.
The 2007 Monster family also adds the new S4R Testastretta to its already impressive line-up. This brand new model is powered by the famous 130hp Testastretta, deep-sump, L-Twin engine, previously powering only the top of the range S4R S. Another newcomer for 2007 is the Monster 695 which replaces the 620 with a quantum leap forward in terms of handling, riding pleasure and performance.
The potent new 695cc L-Twin delivers much greater horsepower and torque - the highest output per cc of any Ducati air-cooled engine -making every twist of the throttle exciting and satisfying.
From this year, the famous Trellis frame, central to the appeal of the Monster family, has been made even more beautiful by improving the routing of all wiring harnesses.
Ducati Monster S2R 800
The S2R 800 is the smallest Monster in the SR family, developed just three years ago to explore a previously unchartered segment - that of the small naked machine with a race personality.
Equipped with an 803cc L-Twin, two-valve, air-cooled engine, the S2R 800 maintains the classic looks of the SR family with a distinctive colour scheme thanks to the iconic racing stripe extending from the rear seat tail piece to the headlamp fairing. For 2007, this engine also respects the limits imposed by Euro 3 regulations.
The S2R is the entry level Monster allowing newcomers to get a first taste of the qualities of the 'single-sided swing-arm' family - the naked bikes with a race personality that have come to personify this emerging market segment. Introduced to the range in 2005, the SR2 has all the aesthetic features of the bigger SR Monsters, combined with the remarkable success of the 800 cc air-cooled L-Twin engine. In terms of styling, the result, which combines typical race details with several of the essential characteristics that have brought fame to the fabulous Ducati naked machines, has captivated the attention of enthusiasts.
For 2007, the S2R is offered in two colour versions: Ducati red with a white racing stripe and black. And there's one highly characteristic technical feature shared by all SR models: we're talking about the much admired vertically stacked twin exhaust system that snakes down the right hand side of the bike.
Chassis
The S2R project is built around a series of chassis solutions designed to ensure that the bike handles in a way that is compatible with its aesthetic appearance. In order to provide the machine with the qualities needed to tackle all riding conditions, it has been equipped with a braking system that combines incredible stopping power with the maximum controllability. The twin 300 mm front discs are assisted by an equally effective single 245 mm disc at the rear . Even though it is the 'smallest' model in the range, the suspension systems on the Monster S2R are exactly as those on the larger displacement higher performance versions: the Sachs single shock is coupled to the attractive and extremely rigid single-sided aluminium swingarm. The front end of the traditional steel tube Trellis frame is equipped with Marzocchi 43mm upside-down forks.
Engine
The 800 cc engine with two valves per cylinder boasts an optimal balance in terms of performance, thanks to its excellent power output delivered without creating problems for less experienced riders. The blend of high performance and reduced fuel consumption was refined with the evolution of the twin- cylinder powerplant, which in its most recent edition has been equipped with electronic fuel injection and a catalytic converter exhaust system. Since 2004, the 800 Desmo engine has been coupled with another distinctive technical solution: the APTC clutch derived from the version installed on 620 engines but with additional updates. The APTC is now fitted with a cush-drive designed to make the downshift phase smoother and more progressive. In addition to the benefits of the APTC slipper clutch requiring a much reduced clutch lever effort, the "slipper" clutch design also eliminates the rear wheel 'lock-up' or 'chatter' during aggressive down shifting
