Cagiva Xtra-Raptor 1000. Nov 06
The design created the outstanding transgressive style along with performance characteristics that in the base version alone are already a point of reference. The colour scheme is instantly recognisable and turns heads.
The whole machine is a living contrast between the shining carbon-fibre bodywork (one-piece tail casing, side panels, rear number plate holder, ducting between fuel tank, cowl and headlamp) and the matte grey of the tank, cowl and rear mudguard.
The Xtra-Raptor how-ever is not just a simple exercise in design. It was designed as a high performance machine. The Xtra-Raptor features a revamped chassis for even sharper handling that distinguish the naked Cagivas.
The Xtra-Raptor is even more manoeuvrable and stable under rapid directional change and adapts to the correct line through every curve. This is as a direct result of the meticulous effort that went into the frame design that incorporates a fully adjustable front fork and rear shock absorber. The specially designed shock absorber has allowed the rear end to be raised by 35mm and has reduced the wheelbase by 10 mm.
The end result is a weighted front end bias that is controlled by an exclusive steering damper positioned in front of and parallel to the lower steering plate.
The Xtra-Raptor was specifically designed for a very special type of customer and in a limited production run as so clearly indicated on the silver plate positioned on the steering head.
Designed for those who truly appreciate mechanical excellence and thrilling performance, the larger twin cylinder 90 V twin Suzuki engine is a display of technological utopia.
This is thanks to an increased bore and stroke (98 and 66mmrespectively) and the 996cc engine features 4 valves per cylinder with dual overhead cams (DOHC). The exhaust and intake valves are 33mm and 40mm respectively.
In order to reduce engine width, new chain driven timing gear was fitted in what is a very elegant and different solution which is one of the things that makes Cagiva stand out from its competitors.
Another nice touch is the automatic decompressor on the exhaust cam that is activated by the starter motor. The two Mikuni 52mm butterfly throttle bodies have single injectors that are governed by the CPU and are highly efficient in terms of size.
The air box has a special electronically-controlled vane that minimises air-flow at low revs.
To eliminate rear wheel bounce through excessive engine deceleration, the engine is fitted with an intelligent system that induces 30% clutch slip under hard braking.
This engine is full of sophisticated technical solutions that gives the rider full control over the bike. The machine pulls away easily without hesitation when the throttle is opened gentlybut give it a hard twist and the full 9.22 Kgm of torque kicks in.
