SV650X coming in April
In creating a cool new look to their 645cc v-twin commuter, Suzuki has added a slotted headlight fairing and complementary side panels, clip-on handlebars, lower mirrors, a pleated ‘tuck and roll’ seat, reshaped and larger capacity (14.5lt) fuel tank, plus blackout treatment for the levers, footpegs and pedals.

A Glass Sparkle Black and Metallic Oort Grey colour scheme with red accents is standard, with a ‘SUZUKI’ tank badge (instead of the large ‘S’) adding to the SV650X’s old-school vibe. All up, the changes on the SV650X are minor, but they make a major difference to the v-twin commuter’s appearance, giving an undeniable ‘cool factor’ to what has been something a dowdy model in Suzuki’s lineup

Mechanically, the SV650X is largely the same as the SV650. That means a 645cc DOHC v-twin engine that, in unrestricted form, produces 56kW at 5600rpm and 64Nm at 8100rpm, but to meet LAMS requirements, a 35kW/57Nm version, like the currently-available SV650, will also be available (see our road test of the LAMS SV650 in JUST BIKES #334).

Other features unchanged from the regular SV650 include the steel trellis frame, 6-speed transmission, 17-inch wheels, twin 300mm front brake discs with ABS, plus the Suzuki Easy Start system and Low RPM Assist function.Slightly heavier than the standard SV650 at 198kg, the SV650X’s seat is also higher at 790mm, while the clip-on bars deliver a more forward-leaning riding position. Suspension travel in the front has been reduced 10m to 125mm, while a front preload adjuster has been added.

From launch, there will be a range of accessories to suit the SV650X, including LED foglamps, a belly fairing, raceplate-style rear fairing covers, fork graphics and rim stickers. More practical options include a smartphone/GPS bracket, tankpad, frame protectors, Yoshimura exhaust system and luggage options. Both versions of the SV650X will be priced at $9,490 (+ ORCs), which is a $500 premium on the base SV650. See your Suzuki dealer for details.
