Lawrence brothers to lead Team Australia at 2024 MXoN
Following their runner-up finish at last year’s FIM Motocross of Nations (MXoN), Team Australia will be aiming to go one better in 2024, with Jett and Hunter Lawence once again leading the Aussie assault. The Queensland brothers, already hugely successful in AMA SX and MX competition, will be joined by Kyle Webster on this year’s Australian team, replacing Dean Ferris.
All three Aussies will be on Hondas and all three will take good form into the premier international motocross event.
Hunter and Jett were first and equal second respectively in the 2024 AMA Pro Motocross Championship 450cc class when the squad was announced in early July. Since then, a thumb injury has ruled 20-year-old Jett out for the remainder of the US outdoor season, but he should be right to race at the MXoN in October. At time of writing (after eight rounds), 25-year-old Hunter had slipped to second in the Pro Motocross Championship.
Earlier this year, Jett became only the third rider after Jeremy McGrath and Ryan Dungey to win the 450cc class in the AMA Supercross Championship on debut, adding more silverware to an already bulging trophy cabinet. The only major point of differentiation between Jett and those American stars is that they are both MXoN winners, which is a gap the Aussie would love to close in 2024.
Webster, after securing the domestic ProMX MX2 Championship in 2021, has been leading the premier MX1 class this year and, during a break in the local ProMX calendar in July, joined the Lawrences in the AMA Pro Motocross paddock.
According to Motorcycling Australia, the MXoN was a major talking point for the Aussie trio – an event where Team Australia has come tantalisingly close to victory but never achieved the ultimate reward.
In 2023, the Lawrence brothers and Ferris gave themselves a tremendous shot at victory, but finished second behind home team France This eclipsed previous best third-place results in 2011 and 2022.
The 2024 FIM Monster Energy Motocross of Nations will be held on 4-6 October at Matterley Basin in the UK.
