Honda announce new CTX Series
In Honda terminology, CTX stands for Comfort, Technology and eXcitement. This brand new series is the beginning of a new family that honda says will feature various displacements and engine configurations that will be rolled out in the future.
First impressions are that the CTX combines elements of cruiser, tourer and commuter bikes, with a low seat and low centre of gravity and plush suspension. Honda say the new range is designed specifically for enjoying the open road, but the first CTX models to be released don't carry all the usual touring accoutrements.
The first CTX models, set to be released in mid-2013, are the faired CTX700 and naked CTX700N (pictured). These debut models in the CTX lineup are built to offer lightweight handling and excellent ergonomics to suit various riding typres, with both powered by Honda's purpose built, parallel-twin engine as featured in the currently-available NC700SA.
The liquid-cooled, SOHC, eight-valve twin produces abundant torque in the low-end and midrange for easily accessible power. A broad torque curve gives the CTX700 series a linear and smooth power delivery, while a relatively long engine stroke and a high-inertia crankshaft add to the extremely tractable power. Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) is standard.
Open, roomy ergonomics on the CTX700 position the rider in a well-balanced seating position for all-day comfort. Honda claim the efficient fairing and a sizeable windscreen divert wind around the rider thus reducing fatigue.
Embodying the same characteristics as the faired version, the CTX700N with its naked styling will be a fun, friendly and comfortable motorcycle that is perfect for everyday rides and weekend trips.
A common feature of the range will be Honda's DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) technology, which will be available as an option on each model to be released, labelled CTX700D and CTX700ND respectively. The availability of automatic transmission on a large capacity tourer-commuter like this should broaden its appeal to older and returning riders. DCT variants will also feature an Antilock Braking System (ABS) to provide full antilock functionality for powerful and secure braking action.
Further details and full specs to be announced closer to the local release date. While sold as 2014MY machines, the first CTX700s are expected to be available locally from mid-2013.
