Classic and rare bikes to be auctioned in SA
From a deceased estate in South Australia, there’s nine bikes on offer, including classic BMWs, plus examples of rare marques, like Cossack, MZ and Maico.
The star attraction is a C1975 BMW R90S, finished in the desirable Daytona Orange with smoked silver tank and guard. Further details were unavailable at the time of writing, but the R90S comes fitted with pannier mounts and is presumably in rideable condition, as it was hooked up to a trickle charger at time of consignment.
The other motorcycles from the estate were on trickle chargers, too, so presumably are also in running order.
Those other bikes include an early-1970s BMW R60/5 (the R90’s predecessor), as well as a 1955 BMW R25/3. For those more interested in modern BMWs, a 2005 R1100S is also amongst the consignments, offered with a tank bag and pillion seat cowl.
Amongst the older motorcycles, there’s a 1980 Honda CX500 and 1980s Honda CB250N, which are fairly rare these days, but the real rarities in this auction are the Eastern European marques, consisting of an MZ TS150 and Cossack 650 solo.
The East German MZ TS150 is a 143cc two-stroke single, finished in silver and appearing to be in very good condition, while the Cossack is essentially a Ural M66 boxer twin, which was rebadged in the UK. The example on offer most likely comes from the 1977-79 period when these bikes were sold in Australia.
Also from Europe, but the other side of the Iron Curtain, is a 1956 Maico Taifun. With its sinuous semi-enclosed bodywork, it’s arguably the visual standout amongst the bikes in the upcoming auction. Debuting in 1953 and in production until 1958, the Taifun (Typhoon) was powered by a 400cc two-stroke parallel twin producing a handy 22hp (16kW) and featured leading-link front suspension and innovative features for the period, like an enclosed chain and automatic clutch.
Further consignments are expected in the lead up to the Great Collector’s Collection on 7 November, which will also feature automobilia, garagenalia and petroliana collectables. For more details on individual consignments and updates, go to: Scammells Auctions
