Australian 125 GP Production Class. April 09
Racing these small bikes may seem like a step down for some, however with their exceptional handling and corner speed, they are a force to be reckoned with on a tight and technical track. The class is for 125cc two stroke machines, and 14 year old competitors (however state legislation will override this rules where applicable) may compete alongside senior riders helping them to further develop their Road Racing skills. In order for 14 year olds to compete they must satisfy their State Controlling Body (SCB) of their competence, obtain a licence endorsement for Road Racing only, and compete in the 125cc GP class or combined classes with similar performing machines.Machines must be up to 125cc single cylinder with a maximum of six speeds in the gear box and for 2009 the newly introduced 250 GP Mono class will this year run with the 125 GP class. The Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) will play host to the 125 GP class at rounds two through to five with the possibility of running at the seventh and final round. For more information about the 2009 ASBK go to www.asbk.com.au.The rounds will be: In 2008 Blake Leigh-Smith took out the 125cc class, with Brad Gross coming in second place and Jed Metcher rounding out the top three. While the class is generally filled with younger riders, here in Australia the 125cc's are not age limited if older riders wish to continue riding in the class. Riders will compete in a series of races and are required to complete a certain number of laps in each. The first rider to complete the laps and cross the finish line is the winner. In order to participate in Road Racing, riders must have a Motorcycling Australia (MA) Competition License. To get this you will need to join an affiliated club and your SCB will have lists of these.Another place to start would be the Motorcycle Road Race Development Association (MRRDA) which will be running the 125cc class at all five rounds throughout the year and will continue to develop riders with coaches in attendance and for more information on the MRRDA check out www.mrrda.com.
