The new FJR boasts a raft of new electronic features, as well as revised styling nose to tail, new components and other features that Yamaha say put the 'sport' into 'sport touring.'
The new-generation FJR1300A model is designed to give today's sport touring riders a sharper style, higher levels of engine and chassis control, and significantly improved functionality with enhanced riding pleasure.
Featuring fresh and aggressive new bodywork, as well as an uprated engine benefiting from the Yamaha's latest electronic control technology, and a refined sports chassis, the latest FJR1300A brings higher levels of quality, performance and satisfaction to the discerning customer.

Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T)
The latest FJR model is equipped with some of the most advanced electronic control systems available in the motorcycle industry, including the Yamaha
Chip Controlled Throttle system (YCC-T). This system functions by monitoring the rider's throttle actions, which are then fed into the ECU.
The high processing speeds of the ECU calculates the optimum degree of throttle valve opening to suit the prevailing conditions, and the servomotor-driven activator adjusts the throttle valve, ensuring that it delivers the right volume of air required to achieve the most desirable power characteristics.
As well as increasing overall power output by 2.8bhp, the new YCC-T contributes towards further refining the FJR's outstanding driveability, and also makes for smoother throttle response for increased riding pleasure.
New Traction Control System (TCS)
A significant change to the FJR for 2013 is the addition of a new Traction Control System (TCS) which is sure to be welcomed, especially by those riders who use their bike all-year round, and in all weather conditions. This electronic system uses sensors to detect any rear wheel spin, and as soon as the rear tyre loses traction the TCS instantaneously adjusts the bike's ignition timing, as well as the fuel injection volume and throttle opening to momentarily cut drive, and ensure that traction is maintained.
This new TCS system is particularly useful when accelerating on wet or unpaved roads, and it can be switched on or off to suit the rider's preferences and the prevailing surface and weather conditions.
Cruise control system
The 2013 FJR model benefits from a new easy-to-operate cruise control system, which has been designed to make long-distance touring more relaxing and enjoyable.
The new system functions in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears between 50 km/h and
180 km/h, and is operated by two switches located on the left handlebar assembly. Cruise speed can be increased or decreased in 2 km/h increments by single pushes on the switchgear, and larger adjustments are made by holding the switch down for longer periods. Any application of the brakes, clutch or throttle immediately disengages the cruise control function, and a 'resume' switch takes the rider back to the last cruise control speed setting.
This cruise control system allows owners to maintain a constant speed when riding over flat and hilly terrain and is a useful tool to automatically respect speed limits without constantly having to check the speedometer, thereby allowing riders to concentrate fully on traffic conditions, road signs and any potential hazards.
Yamaha D-MODE
Yamaha D-MODE is an example of how the application of electronic rider aids can allow the FJR owner to optimise the potential of their machine in different riding conditions. The system changes the character of the engine performance by adjusting the throttle valve in the Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T). Yamaha DMODE offers the rider a choice of two running modes, identified as 'T' mode and 's' mode, which are operated by a push switch on the right handlebar.
In 'T' mode the FJR models produce a 'softer' power curve which is suited to around-town or long-distance cruising. For more sports riding the 's' mode can be selected, which transforms the character of the bike and allows the rider to explore the power output of the high-performance 1,298cc inline 4- cylinder engine.
Revised intake and exhaust systems
Yamaha's engineers have redesigned the 2013 FJR's throttle bodies in order to allow the new YCC-T system to work most effectively. In addition to this change to the intake side, the latest models also benefit from a new exhaust system featuring reshaped internals and revised length, as well as a stylish new tail cap.
Combined with the new, high-tech YCC-T Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle system, these measures help to deliver optimum overall performance at all throttle openings. By allowing the engine to run more efficiently, the new intake and exhaust systems have made it possible to reduce the number of catalysers in the exhaust system from four to two. As well as reducing weight, the reduction in the number of catalysers required to exceed emissions regulations reduces the use of scarce rare metals.
Direct-plated sleeveless cylinders
Direct-plated sleeveless cylinders are used on the FJR for the first time. The new design is similar to that which has been successfully used on the YZF-R1 and YZF-R6 supersport models.
Rather than using a conventional liner or sleeve which is fitted within the alloy cylinders, the new system features a hardened bore that has been electro-plated directly onto the alloy. The main advantage is that is improves heat dissipation to give consistently strong engine running performance.
Unified ABS braking
As per previous model, the new FJR features a unified braking system that applies one front brake when the rear is activated. The system is smart in that a light touch of the rear will apply rear brake only which allows the rider to settle the bike into a corner. Braking is ABS enabled.
FJR1300A in greater detail – styling and appearance
The FJR features redesigned front bodywork which gives the 2013 model a more aggressive appearance, and also offers a number of tangible benefits to the rider.
Major changes have been made to the electrically-operated windscreen. Its shape has been changed to give smoother airflow, and the centre air duct has been redesigned at both the intake and exit mouths. The reshaped ducts reduce the air pressure and turbulence felt by the rider's upper body, giving a much more relaxed and pleasant ride, particularly at higher speeds.
The design of the rails on which the screen moves has been simplified for smoother operation, and the speed at which the screen can be electrically adjusted is now twice that of the current model. As well as the improvement in functionality, these changes have also reduced the number of parts in the mechanism, making it simpler, lighter and more efficient. Another detail change is the fact that the main screen maintains its position when the ignition is turned off.
For improved wind deflection and higher quality of finish, the whole front cowl has been redesigned for 2013. A new upper cowl is now a one-piece unit, while the lower cowl offers better wind and weather protection around the rider's leg area - and for added convenience, the adjustable panel in the lower cowl had been modified so that it can be adjusted without the need for tools.
These changes for 2013 combine to give improved appearance, quicker and smoother screen operation, and an enhanced feel of quality, whilst also maintaining the FJR's excellent wind protection and aerodynamic qualities.
The whole new look of the FJR models has been emphasised by a new more aggressive dual-headlight design. These latest angular dual headlights gives a stronger and more dynamic looking 'face', also they are equipped with a total of six LED bulbs along the low edge to give a distinctive 'eyeline' which serves to give strength and movement to the FJR's front end.
To complement the sharp new front end design, the new front cowl is equipped with built-in LED turn signals whose shape and location enhance the lines of the bodywork. There are two separate turn signals on each side of the cowl, and the lenses have been designed to point downwards towards the front wheel axle to accentuate the dynamic appearance of the new bodywork.
In order to enhance the overall levels of comfort for both the rider and passenger, the FJR1300A sees a number of important changes to its front and rear suspension systems. The 48mm front forks are equipped with new internal components - including an aluminium piston rod and aluminium plunger - to reduce weight for more responsive action. Furthermore, the spring rate has been modified to give smooth and progressive suspension action over the whole stroke of 135mm.
To complement the improvements to the front forks we have also made significant changes to the rear suspension system, which now runs with a revised spring rate and altered damping characteristics for 2013. The combined effect is to deliver optimised suspension action for better handling performance, and also higher levels of comfort for the rider and their passenger.
To match the improvements to the engine and chassis specification, the FJR is equipped with a new brand of radial tyres designed for higher levels of driveability with first-class handling performance. The new tyres' specifications match the chassis designs of the latest FJR models, allowing the rider to optimise the potential of these high-performance sport tourers.
New handlebar control switches have been designed to allow quick and easy operation. As well as the usual switches such as horn, high/low beam and turn signals, the FJR models feature a heated grip temperature adjustment, electronic windscreen adjustment, multi-function instrument panel display switching and a new combined engine start/stop switch.
Inspired by the consoles used in luxury cars, the new instrumentation is a 3- part design with a centrally-located digital speedometer that is flanked by an analogue tachometer on the left, and multi-function dot matrix display on the right. The displays can be customised to suit individual preferences.
The centre stand has been modified to deliver enhanced comfort and convenience. Changes have been made to the link and pivot positions, and as a result the stand can be operated using 30% less energy.
Detail changes
Other detail changes to the 2013 FJR models include a suede-look seat cover side trim, a new tail-light lens and two-piece passenger footrests.
Touring side cases fitted as standard equipment. As with previous models, the latest FJR1300A is fitted with unit-colour matching touring side cases as standard equipment. Featuring chrome plated side protectors, these side cases are robust and waterproof, and benefit from a single-key operation lock system. Each side case can carry up to 10kg in weight, and is capable of holding about 30 litres of luggage or a full-face helmet. Yamaha offers an optional high-quality lightweight inner bag to suit the touring side cases, which features carry handles and shoulder straps for added convenience.
Full line-up of accessories
To enhance the long-distance capabilities of the FJR1300A Yamaha has developed a comprehensive line-up of accessories.
Manufactured from lightweight titanium alloy, the Akrapovic slip-on mufflers give the FJR models a sportier exhaust note and reduce weight. As an alternative to the touring side cases which are fitted as standard equipment,
FJR riders can fit a 39-litre unit-colour matching touring top case - which requires a mounting plate available separately - as well as the separate inner bag.
Yamaha also offers a passenger backrest which mounts to the touring top case. If more storage space is required, there's also a tank bag which can be expanded to take 35 litres.
Yamaha offers a high screen that's over 100mm taller than the standard design for more wind protection, as well as a specially designed extra comfort dual seat for added luxury. The unit-colour matching knuckle visors are designed to keep the wind at bay on the longest of rides, while the foot shields - also in unit-matching colours - integrate with the side cowlings to give good wind and weather protection.
Lightweight bolt-on frame sliders help to protect the frame, cowl and crankcases from accidental damage as much as possible, and serious long distance riders will appreciate the GPS holder which is suitable for the Garmin Zumo660 and Zumo350LM devices. Also available is a stylish resin tankpad which protects the FJR's fuel tank from scuffs and scratches – and besides the standard DC socket, an additional 12V DC outlet socket kit is available for fitment close to the handlebar on the FJR1300A. Owners will want to keep their bike in first class condition, and Yamaha offers indoor and outdoor covers to protect the FJR.
